The problem is people are not taking the necessary measures when they go out. There are many instances where the government intervenes so that people don't ruin themselves. Eg: your 401k. If left to the devices of the common person, the common person wouldn't have savings at the end of their retirement. Same with social security. Same thing with masks and social distancing; if left to a person's own devices ("freedom"), the common person would end up infecting everyone. At the end of the day, society suffers from itself.
Man I haven't even showered since the pandemic started – somewhere on par with the historical shower frequency of the human race in it's entirety – and I'm healthy as a horse. Just something weird about a society obsessed with constant showering, $1000 yearly budgets for soaps/disinfectants and is paralyzed by the fear of a virus that nobody in the real world even notices.
I wouldn't say it's an entirely right wing left wing thing though. I'd probably say I'm more on the right side of the spectrum but I wear a mask in public and try to limit the spread the best I can. On the other side of the spectrum, you have all these left wing BLM guys congregating in protests of thousands, and very few of them take precautions against covid. I really think it's more of psychographic divide between people with different risk tolerances, priorities in life, and consideration for other people.
I agree with Joe about letting people take risks. I don't see why we, as a country, feel the need to save everyone. If some people want to risk dying to go have fun, let them go have fun! At least they die having fun! And all that does is open up more free lanes on the highway, shorter lines in the grocery store and one less idiot person in the world. I just don't see the benefit in saving that person or really anyone else. And it only kills, what, 0.03% of people or something low like that? If you polled everybody and said, "Either we completely destroy the economy, small business and everything else you love to save 0.03% of the population, or we continue to thrive and save our entire society but lose that 0.03% of people." What do you think the vote will go towards? I bet only 0.03% of people vote to destroy the world haha
