Fiery hell is not a true teaching of the bible. The true meaning of the words hell are vastly different than what a lot of religions teach. The lake of fire is the second death a death where there is no resurrection from it. It is as if you never existed at all if you are found unworthy of being in God's kingdom in heaven or on the earth.
There are three words that have been translated as hell. Sheol in Hebrew and Hades in Greek, both mean the same thing. They have been translated as pit and grave. They mean mankind's common grave. Gehenna was a fiery trash dump that Jesus talked about. But when something was thrown into the fiery trash dump it was burned up. Instead of continually on fire 24/7.
Eternal torment is something that goes against a loving God. I don't know of any human being that would suggest eternal torture for some of the worst people in the pages of human history. I believe that if man could actually torture someone forever as punishment for crimes like Hitler. Anyone that would suggest eternal waterboard torture for what he done would be seen as cruel and inhuman. God's ways and thoughts are higher than our ways and thoughts. If anyone's conscience would be bothered by such and idea then so would God's
Some people choose they don't want nothing to do with God or salvation. Others want to live their own life where God would have to come to them on their terms instead of them meeting God on God's terms. There is nothing you can do with people that don't want to change at all. You can scream the warning at the top of your lungs for decades but it will fall on deaf ears if the people don't want to change. That is what will happen to the majority of those that are going to be destroyed as if they never existed at all.
I have no doubt that the teaching of eternal torture in a fiery hell is what has caused a lot of people to turn away from God and become atheists. It makes God appear to be a monster. First he has to create such a place through Christ. Then set the laws that determine who go there. Then he has to give them the gift of eternal life, which is a gift. Then punish them by torturing them. Logic would dictate that you just allow them to receive their wages which is the second death.
