I am sure that I will get a lot of flack for this comment, but I do not believe that it aligns with God’s model of forgiveness that forgiveness is always required. Are you required to forgive someone who is unrepentant? Does God forgive unconfessed and unrepented sin? If he does, then everyone will reside with Him in Heaven. Scripture clearly teaches us differently.
A person may CHOOSE to forgive someone who has harmed him even if the offender is not sorry and has not sought forgiveness. However, requiring an injured person to forgive an unrepentant offender can further harm the injured party. Certainly forgiving is best, but I would argue that God does not require it. The injured party may find peace by releasing his anger and turning the offender over to God to deal with him.
Of course if the offender sincerely asks for forgiveness, then yes, we are bound to forgive.
