  1. Don’t let Tony fool you. Dude had style. Never fell in competitions at Del Mar. he was skating against guys 5-6 years older, much stronger and he was destroying them. You saw it intheir faces when he would mail 10 crazy tricks in a minute. They were done. The only other guy at the time that would give him competition consistently was Hosoi. Truly a joy to watch at Del Mar until the city bulldozed the park in ‘87.

It was crazy. $35 membership for the year and there was a contest almost every weekend. So, you’d get there on a Saturday morning, skate all day, then Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero, Tony Alva, Mike McGill, Steve Steadham, Lance Mountain, Billy Ruff etc would all start rolling in and taking practice runs in the keyhole. You grabbed a burger and a coke and got to sit 2 feet away and watch all of the legends.

  2. Its more impressive hearing his story when you realize skateboarding has really only been what we largely regard it since the 90s. In the 70s it was an alternative to surfing. Then fuckin’ Rodney Mullen invented the MOFUCKING KICKFLIP when Tony was a kid dude! Just an insanely quick progression.
