Jesus did say he was the Son of God. (Now, that doesn't mean that He was the son of Mary and God). He was the Son of God, born in human flesh, with Mary as a medium. Since he said he was Son of God, this itself means that He was equal with God and will receive worship (as also predicted in the Old Testament, example, Daniel 7:13-14). All throughout the New Testament, Jesus said, "Believe in me". We can only believe in God and nobody lower than God, no angels, no gods. When we have faith in the Son of GOD, we are having faith in GOD.
