The serpent was cursed in the garden of eden (and the serpent is a picture of the curse/Satan throughout the whole bible) and the serpent in the stake was a precursor/foreshadow of Messiah took on the curse of death as He paid the price for us and the scriptures say that all are cursed who hang from a tree (stake/cross)
I did a huge study on this a couple years ago. Study ancient stories of scientific accounts of winged snakes migrating across Egypt by the thousands. Then the winged serpent version of the caduceus makes way more sense.
