To confidently rule out the POSSIBILITY of the ET hypothesis, he would have to know the location, history and technological capabilities of every alien civilization there has ever been in the universe. Perhaps he would like to share this data with the rest of us.
Take ufo crashes for example,hugely advanced aliens that are thousands if not millions of years ahead of us can traverse the universe get to earth then crash (they seem to crash a lot,how many is it now!)suits the narrative though after all how could you have bodies, and back engineering without it.
I, an imperfect amateur can take a metal detector and find a bb in a football field in a couple of hours. We humans have telescopes that can scan the cosmos non-stop using sophisticated algorithms finding objects billions of light years away that don't even emit light. If a NHI species were in existence for several thousand years longer than humans – why wouldn't they be far superior to humans when it comes to looking for and finding life on other planets (Earth), no matter how large the universe is? Michael Shermer needs to be more skeptical of his own skepticism.
