  1. Several of my great uncles served in WW2 and WW1. Uncle Robert died on the 2nd day of the Battle of the Bulge from artillery fire. I found quite a few records of past injuries that really put the war in perspective for me…but he wasn't the most interesting story I learned.

His brother, my great uncle Steve JR, was a B17 co-Pilot with the 8th air force, 92nd Bomb Group, 327th bomb squadron. He flew a few dozen missions over Europe through 1944, including on D-Day, and lost multiple planes in the English Channel. His father, Steve SR was an immigrant from Hungary who came to the US in the late 1800's only to be drafted into WW1 and WW2. I couldn't find much of his history unfortunately.

By the end of the war, Steve JR had recieved numerous metals including (but not limited to) a Purple Heart and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. I'm told that when he returned from the war he destroyed all the medals because he felt that he hadn't earned them. I suppose losing so many of his friends overseas left him with survivors guilt which was a common theme coming out of WW2.

The things these men dealt with and kept to themselves is absolutely crazy. I wish more of them told their stories.
