  1. I'm 59 and just had both of my legs straightened via HTO. The right leg was done in late Jan. 2023, and the left leg was done 8wks later, in late March. Have had bowed legs (called Varus Deformity) all my life, and as an athlete (long distance trail runner and aggressive mtb rider…..still doing both sports), I discovered in June 2022, that the inner compartments of my knees had paper thin spacing, and were either bone-on-bone, or nearly so. Did some research, found out about this surgery, and found a specialist in Walnut Creek, CA (Joint Preservation Institute). Via zoom appointments, and emails, shared x-rays, and established a surgery plan for this year. Ortho spec'd that both surgeries would take about 8 months to recover from. I got after it in the healing process, and was nearly fully recovered from both surgeries at 90 days. It's still too early to be running (I can "trot" a very small distance), but otherwise, I'm 100% back to normal, and was back to flogging the mountain bike even before day 90. I've posted a series of progress vids to my channel: https://youtu.be/SDhvUzSehdU

It's not surprising that the clean-up surgery went bad. I've never heard anything good, either short term, or long term, about these kinds of surgeries. My knees were pretty wrecked for a long time, but I never had them touched, for fear of some sort of butchery or infection, making things worse. After my x-rays in June 2023, I had PRP with Stem Cell injections in both knees, and that made a huge difference. I took the req'd 10 days off from training, and by the end of that time, I realized that my knees were so "loose and free" and pain free, that I'd stopped thinking about them all the time. I went back to running and training in prep for my 9th R2R at the Grand Canyon, and 6 weeks later, had a great run. I followed that with an increase in training, and returned 7 weeks later, and ran my 10th R2R as a race against the clock, just to see how fast I could run it. I still pursued the HTO, because I knew that my bowed legs were destroying my knees, and needed to be altered, or the rest of my life would be pretty bad. I'm glad I did it.
