  1. The idea that grappling is the best art for self-defense (not fighting but when attacked) on the street is delusional. Grappling is useless in multiple attack situations, is not well suited for defense against weapons attacks, and is not a good choice for most people who may be smaller than the average attacker. This video is all the proof you need where two professional mma fighters were at a complete loss as to how to respond to a real-world situation (and one they caused by the way): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzOhwRPApcs&rco=1

Mr. Willink's comments are very interesting because they are all partially true. It is not always possible to run away, however, protecting a child, they are faster than you, you are surrounded. He is absolutely right that in most circumstances most fighting techniques don't work if you refuse to engage. You have to be in range to be hit. He is making a good case for studying Aikido. Just because someone grabs me does not mean grappling is the only response left. There is striking and there are techniques and solutions as found in arts like Aikido. Rogan, unwittingly, also makes the case for Aikido when he describes being thrown on concrete as being hit by the world. That is the idea of most techniques in Aikido. Iriminage for example. Understanding distance is also critical for Aikido. Get out of there is exactly the right advice. And Aikido is designed to help you get out of there when the attackers are trying to prevent you from escaping. Clinch and trip as he says is really foolish advice for most people in most real world self defense situations. As to BJJ training being full blast that is obviously not true. If it were all the students would quit. It's fair to say some aspects of grappling drills are closer to all out. Aikido training, because of the ukemi, is also more all out than the training in many arts.

It's just ironic that Joe Rogan has done so much to discourage people from training Aikido and yet, with his guest, unknowingly makes the case for Aikido. Aikido is about escaping from danger in real-world attack situations. Just as a grappler can use the attackers momentum to unbalance and throw them on concrete, this is also how Aikido works. But we stay on our feet so we can then run away. And not be kicked in the head by the attacker's accomplices.

  2. It’s funny hearing a guy as Jocko say “I advise get out of there” but I think martial artists who are well trained their ego gets in the way and say oh no I can take him instead of we should just leave right now and conserve energy and avoid a potential situation. Just because you can clinch and take the guy down and choke him out doesn’t mean you should
