Joseph, darling. Registered Nurse, here. Type 1 diabetes, when treated appropriately, is not a life-threatening disease. Somebody who is 17 years old with type 1 diabetes has lived for 17 years needing to manually control his blood sugar. Diabetes does not weaken the immune system. It is uncontrolled hyperglycemia, where bacteria are able to feed off of the excess sugar in the blood, causing infections to be particularly nasty in people with diabetes who do not control their blood sugar. The same thing happens with lower extremity amputations. It is only with prolonged untreated hyperglycemia that one develops neuropathy and kidney disease and retinopathy. Most people with type 1 diabetes are pretty good about controlling their blood sugar, because they will have been doing so their entire lives. It is generally the older type 2 diabetics who refuse to accept that they must control their blood sugar that generally end up with nasty complications due to their stubbornness and non-compliance with doctor's orders. I'm not saying that doctors aren't full of shit in this circumstance, but they generally are fairly honest, provided their careers are not in jeopardy.
