Okay….. Which Christians?
Saturday observing SDA folk which Pr Doug is… Or…
Sunday observing folk?
Remember…. this is a SDA viewpoint that is NOT commonly held by mainstream Christianity…. Don't let this man have you go down Adventist rabbit holes.
Amen
Agree that drinking to excess, or maybe even daily (?), or drunkenness are wrong and prohibited in the Bible. Gal 5:19. But I think it is wrong to teach that wine in the Bible never means an alcoholic beverage. This is disingenuous. There are many references to being "merry with wine": 2 Sam 13:28, Est 1:10, Ecc 9:7, 10:19, 8:15. Drinking causes one to be merry: 1 Kings 4:20. Wine is clearly an alcoholic beverage in the Old Testament in many Scriptures. H 3196 comes from the root word for "effervescence". This is the same Hebrew word used for wine in the following: Lev. 10:9, Gen. 27:25, 49:11, 29:40, Num 6:3, Dt. 29:6. Also Jud. 13:4. Same word is used in 1 Sam. 1:14-15.
Drinking to excess and being in bondage to alcohol, drugs, food, promiscuity, porn, are "sins of the flesh" and will keep believers out of the Kingdom. Gal. 5:19-21. However, having small amounts of wine and "making the heart merry" appear to have no prohibition. I personally am not a "drinker". But I believe there are far more serious things to be concerned about re: the sheep than a glass of wine once a month or a sip with communion. To "drink a little wine" for your stomach is not the same thing as becoming a drunk.
Nonetheless, it is good if folks depending on alcohol for a good time or who are habituated to it quit because of this message. Being habituated to any substance, even food (look at the obesity crisis in the US) is being in bondage, and sin. Christ came to save us OUT of slavery to sin. To set us free from bondage, right? Rom. 6:14; John 8:31-36. Is the Spirit of Christ in us too weak to conquer alcoholism, lying, stealing, cheating, fornication, pornography, covetousness? No, but folks don't know their Bibles, or don't believe them– and maybe some don't want to be free from slavery to sin. Flesh loves sin. Rom. 8:1-13.
Many, if not most, single women sitting in church pews are involved in fornication, and will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Many, men in church are involved in porn and will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Many, if not most, professing christians are involved in lying, covetousness, disrespecting husbands, feminism, etc… and run the risk of not being in the Kingdom. When will I hear a pastor teach on these?
Pastor Doug
