It's behavioural, passed down by the parents and/or personal life choices. I know plenty of people who grew up with skinny parents, and they grew up skinny as well. They become adults and learn that it's hard to make meals and stay fit, so they get big. Guess what, their kids are big because that's their family lifestyle. Maybe those kids grow up and make different life choices and want to prioritize health, so they get skinny. It's a life choice!
Obesity is mostly a mental struggle, but the physical side of it is very simple. Maybe my mental propensity for snacking and overeating and giving up easily is genetic, but if I sort all that out, the mechanics are simple.
