  1. He was right about the positive effect of concentrated breathing for people with anxiety issues. After years of anxiety/depression issues, the first time I did a seated meditation practice at 21, the immediate and obvious results ans benefits were notable. My sense of relaxation came within the first 5 minutes. It felt like my body had been a tightly clenched fist and for perhaps the first time ever my body opened into a calm and relaxed state. It took me a few years to figure out that such breathing exercises work better in the long run either with the postures of yoga or (in my case) doing a taiji form. The forms of taiji generates positive (yang) energy and then afterwards, the seated meditation produces negative (yin) energies, creating a balance in your health, but mentally and psycho-emotionally the two combined created a much healthier whole. Yes, it sounds like new age, tree-hugging blather, but it's still true that such practices did far more to make me happy than saturating my body with chemicals like zoloft or prozac ever did.
