  1. I am not a greek scholar, but I will say that the punctuation suggested makes the verse sound strange. "For the dead, If the dead" I have a hard time putting those two clauses in the same sentence. It would have been so much simpler to say. "For if the dead"
Similarly, putting a question mark at the end to break up the last phrase throws off the flow for the next verse. "why are they then baptized? for the dead? And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?" It sounds to me like these are meant to be two thoughts understood together not three thoughts. "why are they then baptized for the dead? And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?" I argue they should be interpreted as two thoughts because answer to both questions is the Resurrection.

  2. This is the classic "christian" lie about what happens after this life. They just don't understand God's grace… His gospel will reach every single soul that has ever lived. It will give every single person that has ever lived the opportunity to accept Christ (or not) BEFORE the judgement. 1 Peter chapters 3 and 4 does actually teach us the dead will be taught the gospel and IF they accept it they will "live." Abraham's bosom is paradise and those are NOT heaven. Christ was right in saying there wasn't a way to cross the great distance but only because Christ had not yet died and preached the gospel to the dead. He takes all of these scriptures out of context… though 1 corinthians is not clear about whether the saints performed baptism for the dead.

  3. In chapter 15 of 1 Corinthians, Paul discusses the certainty of the resurrection. In this context, he states that spirit-anointed Christians are baptized into a course of life that will lead to a death of integrity like that of Christ. Afterward, they will be raised to spirit life, as Jesus was. This baptism includes trials similar to those faced by Jesus himself and often leads to a death like his. (1 Corinthians 15:30-34) Faithful anointed Christians have the hope of being resurrected to life in heaven. So this baptism seems related to the baptism mentioned by Jesus at Mark 10:38 and by Paul at Romans 6:3.
