Professor wanted me to get a $200 hardcover textbook for an Econ class, and I found one on Amazon for $7 used. It was an older edition (like 2 editions prior) but when comparing the "assigned" (lol) readings, it was the exact same, but some different practice problems were implemented, and they added an additional section which wasn't even going to be covered in our syllabus. Obviously this was for econ, and this strat may not work for other majors, but just look for a previous addition of the overpriced textbook, and you'll be alright.
