If we ourselves can manipulate dna and create clones, what makes you think beings more sophisticated than us, couldn't have done the same with us?
But apes have evolved in what was once our " stone-age" by using Spears and other tools to catch fish and other food source!! and by watching humans in action!!

Neadnderthals actually had night vision because they hunted Homo-Sapiens. Soem scientists say we went down to a group as small as 50 because our DNA diversity is so little compared to other specieis because unless you were on an Island nation like Australia you were hunted down. Supposedly Neanderthal died from Prio disease from cannabalism, because the game they used to hunt died out from meteor.
