Has Our Attitude Towards Love Changed? Today, on the Sunday Special, we take a look at the oldest love poems ever discovered from the Mesopotamian Love Song for Shu Sin and the Biblical Song of Songs. In an effort to understand love today, it may be fruitful to explore how love was regarded back in ancient times and so, we’ll be spending this episode analysing the two poems and drawing both conclusions and parallels to today’s world.

  1. "I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, Do not stir up nor awaken love Until it pleases."

I think you may have misinterpreted this line.

To me this doesn't read as "please don't awake me from me day dream," it reads more like a warning.
It's kind of like the person smoking telling others not to start smoking. Even though she knows its killing her, she can't stop, but can at least warn others against it.
In the poem, the woman is burning with passion for an obviously illicit romance, and the fury of her emotions is making her what you might call "heart sick." She's telling the other girls to be patient for more a equitable or prudent match, perhaps to wait until they or their partners are more mature.

It's the woman of the poem saying don't do what I did. (This is an obviously ironic contrast to the evocative imagery of the rest of the poem.) Perhaps the Song of Solomon is one of our first examples of the compelling intrigue of the forbidden romance. Imagine the woman of the poem telling her peers this story. They're hanging on the imagery and tantalizing details of this steamy romance. It's like one of those dime-a-dozen romance series books that old ladies love to read. And then she throws in, "Oh, yeah, you don't want to get involved like this." But that just makes it all the more compelling. "Oh, you don't want love like this," she says with a wink.

I guess, in terms of relating it to modernity, we may be able to relate to the idea of heart sickness, when you're so into somebody it puts you in a state of mania. It hurts, but your desire is so strong you just can't stop.

  2. I do have a request. I would like to see a video about afterlives. What was required to get an ideal afterlife, and avoid damnation? What did they imagine an ideal afterlife to be like? Etc.
I have allways found these topics to be quite facinating, as they say quite a bit about the culture in question, with life and death being the big topics that they are.
