Thank God for people like Ali speaking out about these sorts of issues. We seem to be in this transitionary period right now where people want to give others a pass on making bad decisions because of circumstances that are unfair to them, or that a lack of judgement about these decisions made and actions taken is somehow compassionate and ultimately empathetic. But this is dangerous as fuck. Making the "right" choice isn't always easy. In fact, most of the time, it's much harder. It's easier to bully someone with emotional leverage and threats out of some sense of vengeance because of a perceived sleight against you. It's easier to seek revenge than to seek forgiveness. It's easier to ignore someone instead of having a hard conversation with a loved one. When a friend is acting foolishly and you should say something because they're currently undermining their own happiness, but to call them out on it — even politely and carefully — is to shine a light on their own actions and invite conflict into your life. The list goes on, and on, and on.
Maybe someone has a DAMN GOOD reason for wanting revenge, for holding onto hatred in their heart regarding a person instead of seeking forgiveness and love in the face of transgressions. Maybe someone has a fucking PREMIUM reason to sell drugs instead of seeking an alternative situation for themselves. Maybe someone has the very best reason to continue to self-medicate with their substance of choice instead of enduring the pain and trials and testing of oneself, the struggle and development, of seeking a different means of being. But at the end of the day, bad choices are bad choices regardless of circumstance. And there's a line between compassion and willful ignorance.
