This is a recording from the 36th in a series of weekly Bible studies I did back in 2012 – 2014 for our Virtual House Church website. I make no claims of being a pastor or learned Bible scholar. This is just a personal journey through the Scriptures that I shared with others and now wish to share with you. For more, go to: www.virtualhousechurch.com

  1. you know what I noticed …when in the reading there is…by the Lord by the hand of Moses.. to show that (Moses basically became the instrument used by God)…well, just think one had to be very clean to handle the Word given by the Lord…are the hands of the translators of these new translations clean?…..where have our hands been

  2. Rob, I was wondering if you have any further insight about Eldad and Medad. I tried to find their names in other areas of scripture to no avail. I found several theories and legends within Rabbinical writings of which I take with a grain of salt, but feel there is more significance than has been portrayed. the 1st question that came to mind after reading the passages about them was which tribe or tribes do these two come from?
Next is what is the significance of them being in the camp versus in the Tabernacle? When considering that an equal representation of each of 12 tribes would be 6 from each totaling 72, my question then becomes are they of the 70 or are they 2 extra? If they are of the 70 were they disobedient not going to the tabernacle or if they are extras why did God use them to prophesy in the camp?
(side note – can you imagine the sound of seventy men prophesying together? Could anyone clearly discern anything prophesied? Would it make a difference to have 2 men prophesying? Would their prophesy be different because of their audience being of the camp?)

I am inclined to consider the current situation of the camp desiring flesh to eat, the burden of Moses, and God's wrath that the ends the chapter as significant as well. It sort of looks like a microcosmic picture of the last days with the 2 witnesses. Consider that the two witnesses are referred to as prophets and represent both the House of Israel and the House of Judah, the two sticks being reunited. Their words and prophesies are given for a period of time during which many are grieved and troubled. Also consider the wrath that consumes any who oppose them or their words during that time. It's interesting to note that it is not long after that The Lord returns and brings His remnant into the New Jerusalem.

Now compare that with the camp situation with Eldad and Medad. The people were complaining about the mana and wanted flesh to eat (symbolism) like they had back in Egypt. God pours out His spirit on 70 (or 72) to prophesy, but the 2 prophesy longer and apart from the rest. At the time God was bringing in a multitude of "flesh" from the seas surrounding the camp of which the camp consumed to overflowing. Then at the end of the time of the flesh, God's wrath was poured out on those who desired the flesh by killing them. Eventually those who continued in righteousness came into the promised land.

I'd be interested in your thoughts along with anyone else' so long as it doesn't turn into a doctrine bashing session. Peace!
