I’m amazed by the parallels between this ‘What if’ and what actually happened to President Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth. The suppositions here are proven by Booth.
Richard Hammond presented a documentary with a full scale experimental blast, a full size replica of the building built with concrete around the same strength and the wood parts of the structure and the historically recorded amount of gunpowder. They did go over the "decay" of the powder too, damp powder that somewhat dries can still be detonated because the parts that do blast it into dust that then conflagrate.
Needless to say the blast was spectacular and would have killed people in a wide radius, if by flying debris alone and probably would have caused anti Catholic riots right there and then.
