This Undead Nightmare Plagued The Ancient World | Norse Mythology Explained ForYouTube

The Vikings believed that the physical death was not the end. For those who had proved themselves worthy in life and battle, the great halls of Valhalla awaited in the glorious kingdom of the gods known as Asgard. There, the dead – now glorious, eternal beings, dined with the gods and goddesses themselves and lived on forever knowing no pain and having no want. But in some ancient beliefs, the afterlife was a much more immediate endeavour, in that whilst the spirit might have made it to the heavens, the corpse of the deceased remained in the grave….where it was reanimated with a strange, ethereal power.

  1. Very similiar to slavic revenants (the slavic krvoijac, obour, kosac and vampiir and the native american jeeno-windigo, skademagutc and raven mocker the "night hag")… the shamanic-nature prototypes behind werewolfs and vampires.

  2. The most interesting part of the undead in norse belief is how varied they are. In later folklore they appear much more like just zombies stumbling up onto the shore before collapsing, but the older versions get much more esoteric. The aptrgangr is perhaps whats most commonly depicted. A zombie-like warrior whos stronger than a normal man. The haugbui is often depicted similarily only more magical. And then of coruse what I would refer to as a proper draugr. These are not decomposing corpses, sometimes they're described as large monsters, but other times they're described as not being decomposed at all, like a vampire. Their magic abilities appear as the greatest, casting curses and in one saga even being reborn as a great demonic bull.

They honestly fit modern fantasy depictions of vampires more than the actual vampires themselves, other than the classic dracula stuff. Draugrs are not often referred to as well dressed aristocrats. But the more wraith-like magical and monsterous vampires are very much like draugrs.
